Herbs for the Nerves – Natural Remedies for the Nervous System.

The nervous system always need support, because humans are living a super speedy, fast paced, and stress-hormone filled life. There are every day tonic herbs for the nerves which I will highlight today, and then there are also stronger medicinal herbs which require a consultation.

The nervous system depends on our breath. Breathing is one of the simplest and effective ways to nourish and bring vitality back to the nervous system. When we engage in shallow breathing, where we are breathing from our chest rather than deep, full breaths we are signaling to our system that we need to be on alert, on edge, and ready to protect ourselves. Often times what happens is our body forgets to naturally switch on and off from fight or flight states because we have been telling it to be stressed out for so long!

Nettles is one of my favorite herbs for the nerves to help facilitate oxygen into the body, packed with vitamins and minerals, it strengthens the kidney and detoxes the blood. Sipping on a cup of nettles tea before a breathing exercise or meditative practice is a fantastic way to retrain the body, remind the nervous system that it is safe.

When the nervous system is exhausted or damaged in any way, and there are physical symptoms such as twitching of the nerves, then (American) skullcap may be the right herb to bring into a herbal blend. These symptoms are usually quiet distressing as they are uncontrollable and they often go hand in hand with exhaustion and chronic fatigue. The twitching may be in the arms, legs, stomach, neck, eyes, etc. When the brain is overheated, the tip of the tongue is often red and nervous system is having a hay day, skullcap can nourish and remove heat in the system.

Mugwort is the herb that 100 percent helped me become more conscious. My fascination with mugwort herbs for the nervescame about when I traveled to Japan. I happened to be learning about it at the same time we were traveling and my teacher explained how it is highly regarded in Japanese cuisine and desserts. The Japanese bathe in it and also use it during moxibustion in acupuncture. There is a bit of magic in mugwort, it helps to get rid of gaps in the nervous system. Mugwort is great for the person who is a bouncy ball from calm to overly dramatically stressed – on a whim. It helps to see the broader picture in issues, and perspectives. They say mugwort is the doorway to herbal realms. Before I was made aware of that statement, I noticed my dreams were more vivid and just every day life seemed greener and had a sunnier disposition. I was noticing things in nature I didn’t notice before. Every time I drink mugwort I have a desire to go into nature and even hike a mountain! You can drink mugwort as a tea or place it under your pillow before going to sleep for vivid conscious dreams.

The last herb I want to chat about is Motherwort because of its mind-heart connection. Motherwort is the herb I bring in when the nerves, mind and heart are overly active. It is indicated in heart palpitations because it is a nervous tension for when we’ve lost our way, lost faith, and need guidance. When a client has or had issues with their mother or family member(s), motherwort gives that motherly support from the universe that is absolutely needed to feel supported and guided.

Any of these herbs can be taken as a tea or tincture.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about these herbal remedies,

I would love to connect.
