Best Adaptogens for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

best_adaptogens_for_anxiety

Chronic fatigue is a complex condition characterized by profound fatigue that persists more than 6 months. When we feel tired sometimes the best prescription is to lighten our load and take a week off to do nothing, however in the case of chronic fatigue, this can have little to no benefit whatsoever. Today we will discuss the best adaptogens for chronic fatigue syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is more commonly diagnosed in women but I have a sneaky suspicion that there are many undiagnosed men who are fighting chronic fatigue syndrome on the daily.

Signs and Symptoms May Include:

  • All day fatigue
  • Feeling run down
  • Low immunity and susceptible to viruses
  • Muscle and Joint Pain
  • Feeling exhausted after physical activity
  • Poor memory
  • Feeling of overwhelm
  • Needing a nap after mealtime
  • Skin infections
  • Headaches

Specific causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are still “unknown” in the medical world. Each case is unique and is based off of stress management, past stressors, traumas, disease, environmental toxins, hormonal imbalances, viral infections, vitality, life force, nutrition, low immune system and lifestyle.

Chronic fatigue can occur slowly come about over time but it can also come about very quickly especially after a traumatic event or an infection in the body.

When we have chronic fatigue it is important to support our adrenal glands as best as possible. A fabulous way to aid in chronic fatigue is with the use fo adaptogens.

Adaptogens have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicine, and help the body resist stressors of all kind.

The charm of adaptogens is that they work with your needs specifically, adapting their function to your body’s needs.

Adaptogens come in many different forms, including pills that resemble vitamins, tinctures, powders, and teas. There is no right way to consume them because it’s really a matter of personal taste. I personally love taking them in tea or tincture form because tea is such a great way to be present and mindful.Remember to speak to your health care physician before beginning a new adaptogen or nutritional protocol.

The 3 adaptogens I decided to highlight for chronic fatigue are Licorice root, Rhodiola, and Eletheuro. These 3 adaptogens are energizing, balancing, and nourishing. For some, they are the best adaptogens for chronic fatigue syndrome since they aid the adrenal glands in stress management:

Licorice Root: is a great energy booster and superb for raising low cortisol levels. Increases energy and endurance and boosts immune system. Use caution with this one if you’re prone to high blood pressure. Licorice is a pretty potent source of plant estrogens (phytoestrogens), so it’s good for pre-menopause but you want to avoid it you are estrogen dominant. Use it upon waking and after lunch, but not after 2pm, as it may interfere with sleep. Licorice root regulates your adrenal glands, which are the stress glands in your body.

Rhodiola Root: Rhodiola soothes anxiety but can be too stimulating for some. This herb can help reduce stress and is great for people with adrenal fatigue. Rhodiola enhances vitality and is great for anyone training for sports anything: it supports stamina, combats fatigue, repairs inflammation, and boosts recovery for athletes.

Rhodiola is great if you’re feeling burned out and want to restore energy and vitality. Evidence suggests Rhodiola can raise serotonin levels by as much as 30 percent, so it’s been used for mild to moderate depression.

Rhodiola also supports the immune system, aids in symptoms of fibromyalgia, muscle pain, chronic fatigue. I like rhodiola on its own and find it too much coupled up with an adaptogenic companion like green tea. If you’re trying to regulate cortisol rhythm, take rhodiola during the day and ashwaganda at night. Don’t take it after 2pm, as it can be stimulating. Caution: not for use with bi-polar or mania disorder.

Eleuthero: also known as Siberian ginseng, this one is a good performance and focus enhancer. Improves mental alertness, protects against viruses, supports detox. Good to raise low DHEA levels and boost stamina.

Of course there are many more adaptogens that can aid in adrenal health. These are just  3 of my favourite best adaptogens for chronic fatigue. Familiarize yourself with the adaptogens first and find out if they are right for you, if not there are plenty of adaptogens that can be the perfect fit for your specific health and wellness needs.

Much Love,

Robyn
